Dental x-rays let us see what is happening inside your teeth and below your gums, where problems often start long before you feel anything. Many patients wonder whether they are safe and how often they are needed. Here are clear answers.

What dental x-rays reveal

  • Cavities between teeth and under old fillings
  • Bone loss from gum disease
  • Infections or abscesses at the root tip
  • Impacted wisdom teeth and developing adult teeth in children
  • Cysts and other abnormalities

How much radiation is involved?

Modern digital dental x-rays use very low levels of radiation. A set of bitewing x-rays exposes you to roughly the same amount of radiation you receive from natural background sources over a day or so. Lead aprons or thyroid collars may be used for added protection, following current guidelines.

Types of dental x-rays

Bitewings show the upper and lower back teeth and are used to find cavities between teeth. Periapical x-rays show a whole tooth from crown to root. Panoramic x-rays capture the entire mouth in one image and are useful for wisdom teeth, implants, and jaw evaluation.

How often do you need them?

There is no single schedule for everyone. The American Dental Association recommends that dentists decide based on each patient’s age, risk of cavities, and oral health history. A healthy adult with low cavity risk may need bitewings every couple of years, while someone with frequent cavities may need them more often. You can review the ADA’s guidance at MouthHealthy.org.

X-rays during pregnancy

Routine x-rays are often postponed during pregnancy, but if you have a dental problem that needs diagnosis, x-rays with proper shielding are considered safe. Always let us know if you are pregnant or might be. You can also review common questions on our dental FAQs page.

Dental x-rays FAQs

Are dental x-rays safe for children?

Yes. Children may need dental x-rays more often because their teeth are changing, and doses are kept very low using modern digital sensors.

Can I refuse dental x-rays?

You can always discuss your concerns. Keep in mind that without dental x-rays, cavities between teeth and infections at the roots can go unnoticed until they cause pain.
