Dental insurance can save you a lot of money, but only if you use it well. Many people leave benefits on the table every year simply because plans can be confusing. Here is a simple guide to understanding your coverage and getting the most value from it.
Know the key terms
- Annual maximum: The most your plan will pay in a benefit year. Many plans fall in the range of $1,000 to $2,000.
- Deductible: The amount you pay before coverage begins for certain services.
- Coinsurance: The percentage you pay after the deductible, often described as 100-80-50 coverage.
- Waiting period: Some plans require you to be enrolled for a time before major work is covered.
Preventive care is often covered well
Many plans cover routine cleanings, exams, and x-rays at or near 100 percent, often twice a year. Using these visits helps catch problems early, when treatment is smaller and less costly.
Watch your benefit year
Most annual maximums do not roll over. If your plan resets on January 1 and you have treatment planned, scheduling it before year-end can help you use benefits you have already paid for. For larger treatment, splitting work across two benefit years may also help.
Ask for a pre-treatment estimate
Before crowns, implants, or other major work, we can submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurer. This shows what the plan expects to pay and what your share may be, so there are no surprises.
Use your HSA or FSA
Health savings and flexible spending accounts can usually be used for dental treatment, including costs your insurance does not cover. FSA funds often expire at year-end, so plan ahead. The American Dental Association offers more on dental benefits at MouthHealthy.org.
No insurance? You still have options
