Wisdom Teeth Extraction in South Bend

Gentle Wisdom Tooth Removal With Sedation Available

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually make their appearance between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people have room for them, many do not. Wisdom teeth often become impacted, grow in at awkward angles, or only partly break through the gums, which can lead to pain, swelling, infection, and damage to healthy teeth. At Michiana Family Dental in South Bend, we provide comfortable wisdom teeth extractions with sedation options, including IV sedation, to make the process as easy as possible.

When Should Wisdom Teeth Come Out?

We may recommend removing wisdom teeth when they:

  • Are impacted beneath the gum tissue or jawbone
  • Grow sideways or tilted and push against the molars in front of them
  • Partially erupt, leaving a flap of gum where bacteria collect
  • Cause repeated pain, swelling, or infection
  • Develop cavities that are difficult to reach and repair
  • Contribute to crowding or shifting after orthodontic treatment
  • Lead to cysts that can damage bone and nearby roots

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Pain or soreness at the back of your mouth
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums behind your back teeth
  • Stiffness in the jaw or trouble opening your mouth
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste that lingers
  • Headaches or earaches connected to jaw pain

Even without symptoms, regular checkups and X-rays let us catch problems early. Removing wisdom teeth in the teen or young adult years usually means a simpler procedure and a faster recovery, which is why many families in South Bend and Mishawaka plan treatment during school breaks.

Your Wisdom Teeth Exam

We start with a careful exam and digital X-rays, adding 3D imaging when needed, to see each tooth’s position, roots, and relationship to nearby nerves and sinuses. We will explain our findings, let you know whether extraction is recommended, and walk you through the procedure and recovery.

Sedation for a Comfortable Experience

Feeling anxious about wisdom teeth removal is completely normal. Along with local anesthesia, we offer nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. IV sedation is a common choice when removing impacted or multiple wisdom teeth, because it provides deep relaxation and most patients remember little afterward. If you choose oral or IV sedation, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home.

Healing Tips After Wisdom Teeth Removal

  • Bite gently on gauze for the first few hours to help control bleeding.
  • Apply ice to your cheeks in 20-minute intervals during the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Choose soft, cool foods such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and soup.
  • Avoid straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing to protect the clot and help prevent dry socket.
  • Rest and limit physical activity for a few days.
  • Take medications exactly as instructed.
  • Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses after the first day, or as directed.

Most patients feel much better within three to five days. Call us if pain or swelling increases after the third day, or if you develop a fever or bleeding that will not stop.
